Frequently asked questions about bodyboard lessons

What is the difference between surfing and bodyboarding?

Bodyboarding is done lying on a shorter board, wearing fins on your feet. It is often more accessible for beginners because you stay close to the water. Surfing is done standing on a longer board.

Is bodyboarding easier than surfing?

Bodyboarding is generally quicker to pick up. From your very first lesson, you will be riding waves. The prone position is more stable and the fins make it easier to catch waves.

What equipment is provided for bodyboard lessons?

Everything is included: a bodyboard sized for you, fins, wetsuit and rash guard. Just bring your swimwear.

What is the minimum age for bodyboard lessons?

Bodyboarding is available from age 8. It is an excellent introduction to board sports for children, and a great stepping stone before trying surfing.

Can I do bodyboarding if I can't swim?

You still need to be able to swim for your safety, even though bodyboarding often takes place in shallow water. We recommend being able to swim at least 25 metres.

Who is the bodyboard instructor in Capbreton?

Bodyboard lessons in Capbreton are led by Derek Crater, a certified BPJEPS instructor since 2011 and Capbreton native who has been passionate about bodyboarding since age 13. He is a Landes and Aquitaine champion who has competed on the world and European tour.

Does Santocha have a competitive bodyboard section?

Yes! Santocha has an active bodyboard section that competes in FFSurf events. Several of our members regularly shine on the regional circuit, coached by Derek Crater.
