The 3 things to check
The swell
This is what creates the waves. Look at the size (in metres), period (in seconds) and direction.
- Beginner: 0.5m - 1m
- Intermediate: 1m - 1.5m
- Advanced: 1.5m+
The wind
Wind shapes wave quality. Offshore (from the land) = good conditions. Onshore (from the sea) = degraded conditions.
- Offshore: East, North-East
- Side-shore: North, South
- Onshore: West (avoid)
The tide
The tide changes how waves behave. In Capbreton, the best conditions are generally at mid-tide.
- Low: Waves further out, more hollow
- Mid-tide: Optimal
- High: Softer waves

Frequently asked questions about surf conditions
How do I know if conditions are good for surfing?
Ideal conditions combine: a swell of 0.5m to 1.5m for beginners (more for advanced surfers), light or offshore wind (blowing from the land), and a mid to high tide. Our webcam and online forecasts help you assess.
What is an offshore wind?
An offshore wind blows from the land towards the sea. In Capbreton, that means East or South-East wind. It smooths the wave surface and makes them more hollow and clean. It is the ideal wind for surfing. Conversely, onshore wind (from the West) makes waves mushy and messy.
Does the tide affect surfing?
Yes, a lot! In Capbreton, surfing is generally best at mid-tide (rising or falling). At low tide, waves can break further out and be more powerful. At high tide, they can become soft and close out near the shore.
What is the best season for surfing in Capbreton?
Summer (June-September) is ideal for beginners: warm water, gentle swell, mild conditions. Autumn (September-November) delivers the best waves for experienced surfers. Spring is variable. Winter is for experts only.
Where can I check swell forecasts?
Several reliable sites: Surf-Report, Magic Seaweed, Windguru, Surfline. They provide swell forecasts (size, period, direction), wind and tides. Our instructors check these forecasts daily to adapt lessons.
Are lessons cancelled in bad weather?
Only if conditions are dangerous (thunderstorm, storm, waves too big). A bit of rain or moderate wind will not stop us — you will be wet anyway! If a lesson is cancelled, it is rescheduled or refunded.
What is the water temperature in Capbreton?
The water reaches 20-22C in summer (July-August). In spring and autumn, it ranges between 14-18C. In winter, it drops to 10-13C. A suitable wetsuit is essential outside the summer months.
How do I read a surf weather report?
Key elements: swell height (in metres), period (in seconds — the longer the better), swell direction, wind strength and direction, tide coefficient. Our instructors can teach you to decode this information.
