The Gouf de Capbreton
This 300m-deep underwater canyon influences the currents and wave power. A geological phenomenon unique in Europe.
Proximity to the jetty
The Capbreton estacade creates unique currents and wave configurations. It can also offer partial protection depending on swell direction.
A spot that often works
Thanks to its exposure and the influence of the Gouf, the Prevent picks up swells that other spots do not receive.

View webcamFrequently asked questions about the Prevent
Is the Prevent spot dangerous?
The spot requires vigilance due to the currents linked to the jetty and the Gouf. It is not recommended for beginners. Intermediate surfers should carefully observe conditions before getting in the water.
What is the Gouf de Capbreton?
The Gouf de Capbreton is an underwater canyon stretching over 300 km into the Bay of Biscay, with depths reaching 4,000m. It begins very close to the shore at Capbreton, which influences the seabed topography and therefore the waves.
Can you surf near the jetty?
It is strongly advised not to surf too close to the jetty (estacade). The currents there are powerful and unpredictable. Keep a safe distance and follow the information signs.
When does the Prevent work best?
The spot picks up west and north-west swells well. It can be good when other spots along the coast are too small. Autumn and early winter often provide the best conditions.
Is there a surf school at the Prevent?
There is no school on site at the Prevent. Santocha Surf Club, located just to the north, offers lessons for all levels. For beginners, lessons take place on the Santocha beach, which is better suited to learning.
