View webcamFrequently asked questions about the spot
Is the Santocha spot suitable for beginners?
Yes, it's one of the best spots on the Landes coast for learning. The sandy bottom with no obstacles, consistent waves and shallow wading zone make it an ideal playground for beginners.
What is the best season to surf at the Santocha?
The spot works year-round! Summer (June-September) offers gentle conditions ideal for learning. Autumn and spring bring more swell for experienced surfers. Winter is reserved for advanced riders.
Are there dangerous currents?
Like all Atlantic ocean beaches, rip currents (called 'baines' locally) can form. This is why we recommend surfing with an instructor if you're a beginner, or knowing the spot well. Supervised swimming zones are marked in summer.
Which way does the spot face?
Santocha Beach faces due west, which means it picks up the majority of Atlantic swells. Easterly winds (offshore) groom the waves beautifully. Westerly winds (onshore) make conditions choppier.
Does it get crowded?
In peak season (July-August) the spot can get busy, especially at peak times. But Capbreton has several kilometres of beach, so there's always a quieter peak to be found. Off-season, you'll often have the line-up to yourself!
Where can I park to access the spot?
A free car park is located near the Santocha club. In summer it fills up fast. Consider early morning sessions or coming by bike. Street parking is also available along the road.
Can I surf without a wetsuit?
In high summer (July-August) the water reaches 20-22C and some people surf in a shorty or boardshorts for short sessions. The rest of the year a full wetsuit is essential (4/3mm in winter, 3/2mm in spring/autumn).
Are there rocks or obstacles in the water?
No, Santocha Beach is entirely sandy. No rocks, no reef. That's exactly what makes it such a safe spot for learning. The only things to watch out for are other surfers and swimmers.
